Sylvia P. Lackemacher, 82, formerly of Uniontown, passed away Sunday at the Hershey Medical Center following a long illness.
A native of Annahilt, County Down, Northern Ireland, she was the daughter of the late George and Dorothy Law. Sylvia immigrated to the United States with her older sister in 1960. She loved her adopted country and became a naturalized American citizen in 2020.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Arthur, and son Andrew, of Uniontown. She is survived by: her daughter, Andrea Jones (Matthew), Elizabethtown; granddaughters Katherine Jones, Elizabethtown, and Margaret Jones (Gabriel Warner), Millerstown; sisters Betty Wood (John), Asheville, North Carolina, and June Pirie (the late Charles), Northern Ireland; and several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews across the United States and United Kingdom.
Sylvia was vibrant, creative and stylish. She loved spending time with friends, and enjoyed her pets, gardening, needlework, baking, birdwatching, and all aspects of nature. She was an avid political observer and a true American patriot, though she never lost her passion for her native country and its culture. She visited friends and family in the U.K. as often as she could, resulting in the delightful refreshment of her Irish brogue. Upon arrival in the U.S., she worked as a nanny near New York City, in advertising for Bell Telephone and Gannett Newspapers, and later in the family’s independent insurance agency, The Insurance People, in Smithfield
